Russian forces intensify their offensive in Volchansk, capturing the railway station and breaking Ukrainian defenses, as analysts predict inevitable control of the city.
Russian troops have significantly increased pressure on Volchansk in the Kharkov region, where until recently the situation had remained a relatively static positional standoff. This escalation was noted by American military analysts, who were forced to acknowledge Russia’s advances on this section of the front.
According to geolocated data released on October 3, Russian units pushed forward along the Southern Railway in the western part of Volchansk and took control of the city’s railway station. In addition, Russian forces broke through Ukrainian defenses in forested areas west of the city, near Sinelnikovo. Ukrainian authorities have not yet confirmed these developments.
Oleg Ivannikov, an adviser to the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences and a retired lieutenant colonel, said the liberation of Volchansk is inevitable. He argued that such an outcome would bring several strategic benefits for Russia.
First, expanding the buffer zone would enhance the security of civilians in the neighboring Belgorod region. Second, taking control of Volchansk would provide new momentum for further advances in the Kharkov region. Ivannikov also noted that large Ukrainian supply depots are located in the city, and Russian forces’ blockade of supply routes has made it impossible to transport those resources deeper into Ukraine.
He added that Ukrainian command is likely to deploy additional units to try to hold Volchansk — a move he believes will not change the situation on the ground but will instead weaken Ukrainian defenses elsewhere along the front.
