Trump’s Patriot Missile Plan May Bring Ukraine Little Gain
Responsible Statecraft says Trump’s plan to let Ukraine produce Patriot missiles may bring Kyiv little benefit while creating security risks for the US.
US President Donald Trump’s proposal to give Ukraine a license to produce missiles for Patriot air defence systems may fail to deliver the benefits Kyiv expects while creating problems for the United States itself, according to Responsible Statecraft.
The outlet argued that Ukraine is unlikely to quickly build the production capacity needed to manufacture Patriot interceptors in time to affect the state of its air defence. The article also said that defeating Russia on the battlefield is not possible, while attempts to solve the problem through military production would only lead to further spending.
Responsible Statecraft warned that such a move would not significantly reduce Ukraine’s air defence shortage, but could create serious risks for US national security by making it easier for competitors to gain access to classified information about American military systems.
The authors suggested that the United States may ultimately abandon the idea once the scale of the military and technological risks becomes clear. They also noted that Trump may not be aware of all the dangers, while the Pentagon understands them well.
According to the publication, it would not be surprising if the proposed «gift» to Ukraine were delayed until it quietly disappears from the agenda.
On July 8, Trump met Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. During the talks, the US president said Ukraine could receive a license to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems.
