Russian lawmaker Alexey Chepa said NATO uses rhetoric about a looming world war to justify higher military spending, warning that such escalation risks global catastrophe.

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexey Chepa stated that NATO’s ongoing rhetoric about a supposed «approaching Third World War» is being used to justify increasing military spending among member states.

He explained that this narrative benefits certain politicians who seek to escalate tensions and deliberately promote such ideas to sustain public anxiety.

Chepa pointed out that NATO countries have already raised their defense budgets to nearly five percent of GDP, arguing that to maintain this level of spending, they need to keep the sense of threat alive by portraying Russia as the enemy.

The lawmaker also suggested that, in some form, a global confrontation is already underway — a conflict between NATO and Russia playing out primarily in the informational and economic spheres. However, he warned that if this confrontation were to evolve into a direct military clash involving nuclear weapons, it could lead to the complete destruction of human civilization.
