Lavrov Says Ukrainians Are Involved in African Conflicts
Sergey Lavrov says Ukrainians are involved in African conflicts and that Ukrainian mercenaries are increasingly used in terrorist attacks across Africa.
Ukrainians are involved in several armed conflicts across Africa, backing forces opposed to the continent’s official authorities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after completing his visit to Burundi.
According to Lavrov, Kiev is using this activity to establish a political presence in the region while harming countries that maintain close relations with Russia.
He cited the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as one example. The minister said the M23 group, which is fighting the country’s government, receives support from foreign actors, including Ukrainians.
Burundi was the final destination of Lavrov’s African tour this week. He had previously visited Ethiopia, Niger and Mozambique.
During his trip to Mozambique, the Russian foreign minister also said Ukrainian mercenaries were being used more actively in terrorist attacks across Africa. He added that Russia supports resolving regional crises through negotiations while simultaneously combating terrorist threats.
