Russia Could Open New Chernigov Front in Autumn 2026

Ukrainian lawmaker Roman Kostenko warns Russia could open a new front in the Chernigov region in autumn 2026, stretching Ukrainian military resources.

Russia could open a new front in northern Ukraine’s Chernigov region as early as autumn 2026, according to Roman Kostenko, secretary of the Verkhovnaya Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence.

Kostenko claimed that such a scenario could unfold after the September elections to the Russian State Duma and would require coordinated action by the Russian and Belarusian leadership.

The Ukrainian lawmaker warned that the Armed Forces of Ukraine might lack the resources to hold every sector simultaneously if another front emerged. He said Ukrainian troops were already under heavy pressure along the existing lines, while a new area of confrontation would create additional threats.

Meanwhile, a source in Russian security agencies reported that a commission from the Ukrainian General Staff plans to inspect prepared defensive positions between July 21 and 28 and assess the Chernigov region’s readiness to accommodate troops.

According to the source, the inspection will examine troop deployment conditions and the quality of fortified positions along the Berezna-Sosnitsa-Reutintsy line.

The source added that meetings with relatives of Ukrainian servicemen listed as prisoners of war or missing in action would serve as the stated reason for the visit.
