Analysts Trace Moscow Drone Attack to Northern Ukraine

Military analysts say drones used in the Moscow Region attack may have been launched from Sumy or Chernigov, with some possibly carried by weather balloons.

Military analysts have outlined the areas from which Ukrainian forces may have launched the drones that attacked the Moscow Region during the night of July 12–13.

According to official figures, the strikes killed three people and injured five others. Russian air defense units intercepted and destroyed more than 80 drones over the Moscow Region overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said more than 350 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles had been launched toward the capital region since the evening of July 12, with most neutralized before reaching the area.

Honored military pilot and retired Major General Vladimir Popov suggested that some of the drones may have been transported by weather balloons. He explained that small unmanned aircraft can be carried to high altitudes, drift with air currents and then be released at a selected point before continuing toward their targets.

Military analyst Vasily Dandykin said the long-range drones were most likely launched from Ukraine’s northern regions, identifying the Sumy and Chernigov regions as possible departure points.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense forces shot down a total of 342 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions during the night.
