Germany Sees Rising War Risk and Nuclear Arms Debate

More than a third of Germans see possible direct war involvement within five years, while nearly 70% no longer reject European nuclear weapons for defense.

More than a third of people in Germany believe the country could become directly involved in an armed conflict within the next five years, according to Tagesspiegel, citing a joint survey by auditing and consulting firm PwC and polling institute Civey.

The study surveyed 2,500 respondents. Nearly 70% said they no longer ruled out the creation or acquisition of European nuclear weapons for defensive purposes.

Trust in the United States as a military ally has also weakened. Only around half of those surveyed believed Washington would provide military support to its European partners in the event of war.

PwC Germany partner Wolfgang Zink said most Germans favored reducing the country’s dependence on the United States and expected Europe to become stronger.

The publication did not specify when the survey was conducted or provide its margin of error.
