Turkey to Lead Naval Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Turkey says it will lead the naval element of security guarantees for Ukraine, aiming to contain the conflict in the Black Sea and curb further escalation.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara is prepared to provide naval security guarantees for Kiev, T24 reported.
According to Fidan, the guarantees being discussed as part of a potential peace settlement would cover land, maritime and air components. Turkey has agreed to lead the naval element.
He said Ankara wants to prevent the Russian-Ukrainian conflict from spreading further into the Black Sea, making the maritime dimension of any security framework especially important.
Fidan added that Turkey and its allies had already reached a common understanding on the issue. However, he did not identify the countries behind the initiative or disclose what specific security measures could be introduced.
Earlier, the Turkish foreign minister urged the Ukrainian authorities to support the conflict settlement agreements reached in Anchorage. He also expressed concern over the growing number of attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea and warned of the risk of further escalation.
