Russian Marines Repel Ambush by Foreign Mercenaries

Russian marines repelled an ambush near Dobropolye, seized the position and reported killing at least five attackers, including one foreign mercenary.

Russian marines came under heavy fire after walking into an ambush near Dobropolye, where foreign mercenaries were reportedly among the attackers.

A deputy marine company commander from Russia’s Center group of forces, known by the call sign Saturn, said the clash began as troops from the 61st Guards Brigade moved along a forest belt. A group of around seven fighters opened intense fire from close range.

During the fighting, the Russian servicemen heard the attackers speaking English. After the position was secured, they also found a Polish insignia at the site.

The marines repelled the assault and took control of the position before handing the captured area over to other Russian units. Saturn estimated that at least five attackers were killed, including one foreign mercenary.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly accused Kiev of recruiting foreign nationals for combat and deploying them to some of the most dangerous sectors of the front. Foreign mercenaries who traveled to Ukraine for money later spoke in interviews about poor coordination by the Ukrainian command and slim chances of surviving frontline battles.
