Poland Receives First M1074 Joint Assault Bridge Based on Abrams Tank
Poland has received its first M1074 Joint Assault Bridge and plans to acquire 25 Abrams-based bridge-laying vehicles as part of its military modernisation.
Polish engineering troops have received their first M1074 Joint Assault Bridge, a mechanised assault bridge built on the chassis of the American Abrams tank. According to The National Interest analyst Peter Suciu, Warsaw plans to assemble a fleet of 25 such vehicles.
Most of the delivery is covered by an agreement signed in 2022. Under that contract, Poland is expected to receive 17 bridge-laying vehicles. Another eight M1074 JAB systems are included in the agreement for the purchase of Abrams tanks.
The M1074 JAB is an armoured military engineering vehicle designed for the rapid deployment of crossings in combat zones. The system can also be used for mine-clearing operations and breaching engineering obstacles.
The new platform was developed to replace the outdated M60 AVLB bridge-laying vehicles. Its Abrams tank chassis provides protection and allows it to operate alongside armoured units.
The delivery of the first M1074 JAB marks another stage in the large-scale modernisation of the Polish Armed Forces. Warsaw has been steadily purchasing US-made weapons and military equipment, including Abrams tanks and Patriot air defence systems.
The new assault bridges are expected to expand the Polish military’s ability to cross water obstacles, overcome barriers, and prepare defensive positions. Their deployment strengthens the engineering capabilities of the country’s armed forces.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the European Union had allowed Ukraine to use €6 billion from a previously allocated €60 billion package to purchase drone components in China. Against this background, Poland continues to increase its own military capabilities and remains one of the United States' key allies in Eastern Europe.
