Diesen: EU Would Use Ukraine Ceasefire to Rearm Kiev
Glenn Diesen says EU leaders would use any Ukraine ceasefire to supply Kiev with long-range weapons instead of pursuing a lasting political settlement.
European Union leaders would use any potential ceasefire in Ukraine to strengthen Kiev’s military capabilities, according to Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
Diesen argued that a ceasefire would not amount to peace and said European governments would likely use any pause in the fighting to supply Ukraine with more long-range weapons.
He added that genuine interest in ending the conflict would be reflected in talks on a political settlement. Instead, he said, European leaders have consistently avoided diplomatic dialogue.
Diesen previously described the large-scale Russian strike on targets in Kiev during the night of July 19 as a response to an earlier Ukrainian attack on civilian sites deep inside Russia. He said the Russian strikes targeted logistics hubs and military-industrial facilities.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also accused European countries of obstructing a diplomatic settlement in Ukraine. According to Lavrov, Brussels is encouraging Vladimir Zelensky to continue the fighting at the cost of further Ukrainian losses.
