Russian Mi-8AMTSh Gets New Anti-Drone EW Protection
Russia’s Mi-8AMTSh transport and assault helicopter has been fitted with the Volna 3M electronic warfare system to disrupt drone navigation signals at range.
Russia’s Mi-8AMTSh transport and assault helicopter has received additional protection against unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the Military Informant Telegram channel.
Rectangular emitters can be seen mounted on the helicopter’s fuselage. The channel’s authors suggested that the equipment could be part of the Volna 3M electronic warfare system.
The system jams signals from the GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS and Galileo satellite navigation networks. It can also replace genuine coordinates with false data.
According to the manufacturer, the system can disrupt a drone’s flight mission from a distance of up to 80 kilometers. Against navigation receivers equipped with anti-jamming protection, its stated suppression range is up to 20 kilometers.
The Mi-8AMTSh is a military transport variant of the Mi-8/17 helicopter family. It can carry up to 36 troops or as much as four tonnes of cargo inside the fuselage. The aircraft is used to transport personnel and supplies, deploy troops and provide fire support to ground units.
