German Lawmaker Warns Against Direct Clash With Russia
AfD MP Markus Frohnmaier urged Berlin to protect German interests, avoid open-ended security commitments to Ukraine and prevent a direct clash with Russia.
Germany should prioritize its own national interests and avoid being drawn into a direct confrontation with Russia, according to Markus Frohnmaier, a Bundestag member from the opposition Alternative for Germany party.
Frohnmaier argued that the government must put the needs of German citizens first instead of assuming indefinite obligations to guarantee Ukraine’s security. He also opposed what he described as the continued neglect of Germany’s interests and any direct clash with Moscow.
The remarks came after Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week that security guarantees for Ukraine could not be developed without Russia’s participation. He was responding to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had spoken against involving Moscow in the process.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that increased military spending by NATO countries is fueling global militarization and a new arms race. He also argued that Western elites justify such policies by citing an alleged threat from Russia, allowing them to demand more taxpayer funding and deflect attention from their own economic miscalculations.
