NATO May Deploy More Troops and Air Defenses to Lithuania
NATO may send additional troops and air defense systems to Lithuania if the security situation becomes critical, a presidential adviser in Vilnius has warned.
NATO could deploy additional troops and air defense systems to Lithuania if the country’s security situation reaches a critical point, Lithuanian presidential national security adviser Deividas Matulionis said on Žinių radio.
According to Matulionis, Lithuania has already warned the alliance about the risks, and NATO is treating the matter seriously. He expressed confidence that additional forces and air defense capabilities would be allocated if the available indicators pointed to a critical threat.
Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service reported that Western experts believe Germany could develop its own nuclear weapons within a year. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Moscow would take Berlin’s activity in this area into account in its military planning.
The Sun also reported on British military exercises in Estonia involving simulated drone strikes against St. Petersburg. According to the newspaper, the drills feature the jet-powered Nyan drone, which has a range of more than 240 kilometers and is designed to strike oil depots, ammunition warehouses and command posts.
Russia has repeatedly drawn attention to what it describes as unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders. The alliance presents its expanding military initiatives as an effort to deter «Russian aggression.»
Moscow has repeatedly voiced concern over the buildup of NATO forces in Europe. Russian officials maintain that the country poses no threat to others but will respond to actions capable of damaging its interests.
