Belarus Denies Building Fortifications on Ukraine Border
Belarus denies fortifying its border with Ukraine, calling the reports an information campaign while maintaining a limited military presence in the south.
Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said the country is not building fortifications along its border with Ukraine. He described reports claiming otherwise as part of an information campaign directed against Minsk.
According to Khrenin, such claims are intended to stir tension in both Belarusian and Ukrainian society and deepen hostility between the two countries.
He noted that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko had previously ordered the creation of fortified areas along the country’s borders. Work on the western and northern sectors has been completed, with five fortified zones now in place and undergoing further modernization.
No defensive lines are planned for the southern border. Khrenin said only a limited number of special operations units are stationed near Ukraine, where they work alongside border guards to monitor the situation and protect nearby areas.
The minister added that their presence is necessary to respond to any sudden threats. Military personnel continue training as scheduled, taking into account the findings of a comprehensive inspection conducted earlier this year.
