Russia Uses Signal Spoofing to Disable Ukrainian Drones

Russian troops are using video-signal spoofing to disrupt Ukrainian drones, while trials of the Perun laser system continue with a range of five kilometers.

Russian troops have begun using video-signal replacement technology in the special military operation zone to disrupt Ukrainian operators’ control over their drones.

The system, known among Russian units as a «curtain», replaces the image transmitted to the operator of a Ukrainian strike drone, according to a senior reconnaissance officer with the call sign Piton. He serves in the 29th Artillery Regiment of the 11th Corps within Russia’s Sever group of forces.

Piton said that once the drone’s video feed is intercepted, the aircraft loses its bearings and veers away from its programmed route. The operator is then unable to restore the original image or regain effective control. According to the reconnaissance officer, drones affected by the technology fail to reach their intended targets.

Russian media previously reported that trials of the new Perun laser system are continuing in Russia. The complex was developed to destroy various types of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Perun can operate continuously on battery power for up to 15 minutes, while its total combat-duty time reaches five hours. Its stated engagement range against aerial targets is up to five kilometers. A single use involving ten seconds of continuous laser exposure costs slightly more than 200 rubles.
