Military analyst says capturing the Krasnolimansk slag heap may open the way for Russian forces to encircle Ukrainian troops and cut vital supply routes.
Russian forces could gain control of the Krasnolimansk slag heap within the next month, according to military analyst Mikhail Onufrienko. This elevated position holds strategic value, as it could pave the way for an offensive toward the Krasnoarmeysk-Mirnograd urban area.
Onufrienko explained that capturing the slag heap would enable Russian troops to outflank Ukrainian positions in the sector. Following the recent seizure of administrative buildings at the Krasnolimanskaya mine in the DPR, he sees the removal of Ukrainian units from the nearby high ground as the logical next step. He believes that rocket artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles will be decisive in this phase of the operation.
He emphasized that securing the entire mine complex would open the road to Rodynske, a key logistical hub. Cutting off this location would sever both road and rail supply lines to Ukrainian forces. According to the analyst, such a move would set the stage for a pincer operation against the largest urban concentration in the area — the Krasnoarmeysk-Mirnograd agglomeration.
Beyond its military importance, the site carries significant economic weight. Losing it would deal a blow to Ukraine’s metallurgical industry and regional energy sector due to coal shortages.
Onufrienko also pointed out that active Russian operations in this zone draw Ukrainian resources away from other contested areas, easing the pressure on Russian units fighting in Udachne and Kotlyne. He added that the area houses Mine Administration No. 1, a fortified Ukrainian stronghold reinforced with extensive concrete defenses.
Previously, DPR adviser Igor Kimakovsky reported that Russian troops had cleared Ukrainian forces from the administrative buildings of Krasnolimanskaya — the second-largest coal enterprise in the region.
