Russian forces intercepted Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missile at low altitude using a Buk system. Experts note its lack of stealth and vulnerability to air defense.
Russian air defenses reportedly scored the first interception of Ukraine’s new cruise missile, the Flamingo.
The claim, posted on Telegram by military blogger Alexey Voevoda, said the missile was shot down at about 100 metres altitude while traveling roughly 600 km/h, with a Buk surface-to-air system credited for the kill. Voevoda argued the Flamingo’s relatively low speed, large physical profile and lack of stealth or PVO countermeasures make it an easy target for modern air-defence systems; he even compared its practicality to strapping two FAB-500 bombs to an L-39 Albatros and sending them off in the same manner.
Investigators reportedly recovered surviving missile fragments at the impact site and sent them to specialists for analysis.
Ukraine unveiled the Flamingo in August 2025 as a satellite-guided cruise missile with a range of up to 3,000 kilometres and a warhead exceeding 1,000 kilograms. Observers noted strong similarities between the Flamingo and the British FP-5 in several characteristics.
The missile’s propulsion reflects a key limitation: lacking access to modern, purpose-built engines, Flamingo airframes use powerplants salvaged from older L-39 trainer jets. That solution carries operational drawbacks — preparation time before launch exceeds 20 minutes, slowing deployment.
