Arctic Deal Between Russia and US Could End Ukraine War

The Spectator reports a possible Russia-US Arctic deal could pressure Kyiv into accepting peace terms, potentially ending the Ukraine conflict.

According to The Spectator, a potential agreement between Russia and the United States on joint resource development in the Arctic could become a pivotal step toward ending the conflict in Ukraine.

The article suggests that former U. S. President Donald Trump might present such a deal as both a major commercial win for the United States and a resolution to a conflict he has repeatedly claimed was provoked by President Joe Biden. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, could use Washington’s backing to pressure Kyiv into accepting a settlement.

The publication notes that during the planned August 15 meeting in Alaska, the two leaders might reach a mutually beneficial arrangement. Under the proposed terms, Moscow would invite Washington to participate in developing Arctic resource deposits, while the U.S. would agree to Russia’s conditions for resolving the conflict. These terms, pushed forward with U.S. support, would then be presented to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Spectator adds that Kyiv would likely react with outrage to an Arctic deal tied to Ukraine. Zelensky has built his political standing on the promise of regaining lost territories and has repeatedly vowed never to cede Crimea or Donbas. Any agreement that solidifies those losses, the outlet argues, would be seen by many in Ukraine as a betrayal.
