Donald Trump said he may approve Tomahawk missile deliveries to Ukraine if peace efforts fail, warning Putin of serious consequences and emphasizing rising tensions.
During a briefing with U.S. reporters, President Donald Trump addressed the conflict in Ukraine and the potential delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv.
The American leader said he expected Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a settlement of the conflict, warning that otherwise Moscow would face serious consequences. Trump noted that Putin «would look great» if he managed to bring the situation under control and added that failure to do so would «end badly» for Russia.
Trump also spoke about his recent conversation with Vladimir Zelensky. According to him, the Ukrainian president explained what specific types of weapons Ukraine needed and requested Tomahawk missiles. Trump said he was prepared to approve such deliveries only if diplomatic efforts failed. He added that he intended to discuss the matter directly with Putin.
The U.S. president pointed out that Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk missiles represented an escalation of the conflict. He stressed that if the situation remained unresolved, he would be ready to authorize the transfer of these weapons to Kyiv.
Two phone calls between Trump and Zelensky took place on October 11 and 12. Zelensky described the talks as productive but acknowledged afterward that Washington had not yet made a final decision on the missile deliveries.
Even without that decision, the Ukrainian leader has already begun outlining potential military targets, insisting the missiles would be used exclusively against military objectives. He emphasized that the goal of the request was to increase pressure on Russia.
