The New York Times reports that Ukraine could face major technical issues deploying U.S. Tomahawk missiles because it lacks the necessary Typhon launchers.

The potential transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine could face serious technical challenges due to the country’s lack of compatible launch systems, The New York Times reported.

According to the publication, the U. S. Department of Defense has already drafted plans for a possible sale or delivery of the missiles. However, the final decision will depend on U. S. President Donald Trump.

The report notes that to operate Tomahawk missiles, Ukraine would need Typhon launchers — mobile ground-based systems currently in limited use by the U. S. Army. American military officials warned that deploying such complexes could risk direct confrontation between Washington and Moscow.

The article also points out that uncertainties remain over how many Tomahawks the U.S. could supply, how Ukraine would safely store them, and what consequences such a transfer might trigger.

Earlier, The Financial Times reported that the potential deal could involve up to 50 Tomahawk missiles. Former Pentagon official Mark Cancian told the outlet that the U.S. arsenal currently includes around 4,100 of these cruise missiles, but he suggested that Kyiv would likely receive only a handful, if the transfer goes ahead.
