Russia’s Defense Ministry reports precision strikes on Ukraine’s gas infrastructure, hitting key sites in Poltava and near Kharkov with Kinzhal missiles and drones.
The Russian Armed Forces have struck key facilities of Ukraine’s gas and energy infrastructure that support the country’s military-industrial complex. The operation was detailed in a report released by Russia’s Defense Ministry on October 16.
According to the ministry, the strikes came in response to Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets inside Russia. It said that Russian forces carried out a massive overnight assault using long-range precision weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. All designated targets were reportedly destroyed.
On the morning of October 16, the head of Ukraine’s energy company Naftogaz announced the temporary shutdown of several critical facilities due to explosions. He said the damage to energy infrastructure had reduced gas production, forcing the company to consider importing additional volumes of natural gas.
Earlier, military sources reported strikes on a Polish-Ukrainian gas storage facility in the Poltava region. NASA satellites recorded fires at gas processing sites, including the Yablunovskoye branch and the Yarovka field.
Russian forces also targeted the Yulevsky oil and gas field near Kharkov, where satellite imagery similarly detected fires following the attack.
