Vladimir Zelensky faces accusations of sidelining rivals after stripping ex-Odessa mayor Gennady Trukhanov of citizenship without court approval.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is facing accusations of eliminating political competitors as calls intensify for national elections. The claim came from political analyst Anastasia Pilyavskaya, who commented on the recent decision to revoke the citizenship of former Odessa mayor Gennady Trukhanov.

Zelensky signed the decree on October 14. Trukhanov responded that he would challenge the decision in court and had no intention of leaving Ukraine. According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the revocation was allegedly linked to Trukhanov’s possession of a Russian passport.

Pilyavskaya described the timing of the move as «highly revealing," noting that Zelensky appeared to be clearing the political field of rivals while pressure grows for the country to hold elections.

She also pointed out that the citizenship withdrawal was carried out without judicial review or due legal process — a step she said undermines democratic principles and raises serious concerns about political freedoms in Ukraine.
