Axios reveals Donald Trump’s tense meeting with Vladimir Zelensky in Washington, marked by sharp exchanges and hardline proposals on the Ukraine conflict.
According to the news portal Axios, citing several unnamed sources, the recent meeting between U. S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Washington was far from smooth. The tone of the American leader was described as tough, and the overall atmosphere — strained.
One source told the outlet that the meeting «wasn’t easy," while another went further, saying it «went badly." According to Axios, Trump made several sharp and emotionally charged remarks, creating moments of visible tension. While no one raised their voice, the American president’s manner was reportedly firm and uncompromising.
Citing those familiar with the discussion, Axios writes that Trump reiterated Washington’s current proposal for resolving the conflict — to end it along the existing front line. The American leader acknowledged that such a settlement would be difficult for Ukraine to accept.
During the same meeting, Trump also admitted that transferring Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv could provoke escalation and, as he put it, «many other bad things.»
The conversation took place a day after Trump’s 150-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The following day, he received Zelensky in person at the White House.
Moscow has repeatedly stressed that freezing the conflict along the current line of contact is unacceptable for Russia. During his annual call-in show in December last year, Putin emphasized that Russia was seeking not a temporary truce but a lasting peace secured by reliable guarantees for the country’s safety and that of its citizens.
Earlier, in the summer of 2024, Putin unveiled a series of peace proposals regarding the Ukrainian conflict. He stated that Moscow would immediately cease fire and declare readiness for talks once Ukrainian troops completely withdraw from the territories of the new Russian regions. Additionally, Kyiv would have to officially renounce its plans to join NATO, agree to demilitarization and denazification, and adopt a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status.
