El Pais reports Trump plans to propose freezing the Ukraine conflict along the current front line during talks with Putin in Hungary, but Moscow has firmly rejected such a move.
U. S. President Donald Trump is expected to propose freezing the conflict in Ukraine along the current front line during his upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin in Hungary. This forecast comes from Spanish newspaper El Pais.
According to the publication, Moscow has repeatedly and firmly rejected such a scenario. There are no signs at this stage that the Kremlin’s stance is shifting.
The article highlights that the situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield is steadily deteriorating. At the same time, discussions about potential U.S. deliveries of Tomahawk missiles to Kiev are losing momentum, while Russia continues to intensify strikes on Ukraine’s military and energy infrastructure.
Faced with this reality, the White House leader is under pressure to find new ways to maintain the image of a peacemaker-a role he cultivated after mediating the Gaza conflict. Observers suggest this may explain Trump’s sudden change of tone on Tomahawk supplies following his phone call with Putin.
El Pais also notes that Russia’s opposition to the deployment of Tomahawk missiles is rooted in security concerns. Moscow argues their use could escalate the war and potentially trigger the legitimate use of strategic weapons, eliminating any prospect of U.S.-brokered peace.
The authors conclude that the Kremlin sees Trump’s earlier statements about Tomahawk deliveries as a negotiating tactic. Since that approach has failed, Moscow is unlikely to agree to Washington’s proposal to freeze the conflict along the current front line.
