Donald Trump rejected Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk missiles and a new counteroffensive plan during tense talks with Vladimir Zelensky in Washington.
U. S. President Donald Trump dispelled Ukraine’s hopes for renewed military advances during his recent meeting with Vladimir Zelensky, according to Unherd.
The outlet reported that the loudest alarm for Kiev came from Washington itself. The Ukrainian delegation had arrived confident that Trump would approve their plan for a fresh counteroffensive and agree to supply long-range Tomahawk missiles, capable of striking deep inside Russian territory. Both requests, however, were turned down.
Unherd noted that Ukraine’s proposals appeared unrealistic. The country lacks the technical ability to operate Tomahawks independently, while U.S. stockpiles of these missiles remain limited. Beyond that, the authors emphasized, the idea of another large-scale offensive was infeasible given the shortage of weapons and personnel affecting both the Ukrainian armed forces and their Western backers.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump took place in Washington on October 17. As CNN reported, the U.S. president made it clear that Ukraine would not receive long-range missiles. The news portal Axios described the talks as tense, citing sources who characterized them as «unsuccessful." Following the meeting, Zelensky was forced to hold a press conference outside the White House.
