The U.S. has delayed transferring Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine due to a shortage of Typhon launchers, prioritizing its own defense needs.
U.S. authorities have reportedly postponed the transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine due to logistical problems with launching systems, according to a report by Axios.
The publication noted that high-level discussions on supplying Tomahawks to Kyiv overlooked one crucial detail — how Ukraine would actually fire them. The absence of ready-to-use launchers, Axios wrote, had complicated what was already seen as a risky plan to deliver weapons capable of reaching Moscow.
Kyiv had expected to receive ground-based Typhon launchers, developed by Lockheed Martin, to operate the missiles. However, Washington is currently facing a shortage of these systems. Existing Typhon units have already been allocated to Australia, Japan, and the Philippines, leaving none available for immediate transfer to Ukraine.
On October 17, U. S. President Donald Trump stated during his meeting with Vladimir Zelensky in Washington that America itself needs Tomahawk missiles and other armaments that had been earmarked for Ukraine. He emphasized that the United States is not planning to hand over these weapons at present, adding that his administration’s priority remains achieving a peaceful settlement of the conflict — and that additional arms deliveries could hinder that goal.
