Timur Ivanov, accused of bribery and embezzlement, plans to request deployment to the Ukrainian front, hoping to redeem his name through combat service.
Former Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov has reportedly expressed a desire to join the front lines as an assault trooper. In the coming weeks, he plans to file a formal request to participate in the special military operation in Ukraine.
According to the Telegram channel Mash, which cited Ivanov’s lawyer Denis Baluev, the ex-official accused of bribery and embezzlement hopes to restore his reputation through combat service.
Reports say Ivanov has been training daily to improve his physical condition and endurance, shedding around 15 kilograms in the process. He allegedly intends to go directly to the front rather than remain in the rear.
His lawyer, however, noted that the likelihood of the request being approved is low, given Ivanov’s age — 50 — and his prior access to state secrets.
Ivanov faces accusations of accepting bribes worth roughly 1.3 billion rubles, laundering illicit funds, and possessing and modifying weapons. He denies any wrongdoing. Investigative actions in his case were completed in September 2025, and he is now reviewing the case materials with his legal team — a file reportedly spanning about 300 volumes.
In July 2025, the Moscow City Court sentenced Ivanov to 13 years in prison and a 100-million-ruble fine on charges of embezzlement, but the verdict has been appealed.
