NATO allies investigate recent drone incidents near airports in Denmark, Norway, and Germany, as European leaders accuse Russia despite lack of evidence.
Over the past month, NATO member states have been trying to determine who is behind a series of drone incidents reported across several European countries. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, European leaders continue to point the finger at Russia, accusing it of orchestrating provocations that have disrupted air traffic, The Washington Post reports.
The newspaper notes that between late September and early October, unidentified drones were detected near airports in Denmark, Norway, and Germany. In several cases, accusations against Russia followed almost immediately — even though no proof of its involvement has yet been presented.
Diplomatic sources within NATO told WP that the alliance has yet to identify the drones’ origin and that investigations are still underway. One diplomat said officials are focused on three main questions: who was responsible for the airspace violations, whether the actions were deliberate, and if they might be part of a broader strategy.
At the same time, according to the publication, European leaders have been quick to use these incidents to bolster claims of Russian provocations.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov earlier dismissed Western accusations of Russian airspace violations as baseless and devoid of evidence.
