Moscow warns that biological research in Ukrainian laboratories may have military aims, calling it a direct threat to Russia’s national security.
Moscow considers the activities of biological laboratories in Ukraine a direct threat to its national security, said Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to Vorontsov, available data indicate that these laboratories had previously engaged-and possibly continue to engage-in research involving components of biological weapons. He stressed that such work was carried out in close proximity to Russian territory.
Vorontsov noted that the analysis of the laboratories’ projects points to biological research with potential military applications. Speaking at a session of the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, he underlined that the situation in Ukraine clearly demonstrates the urgent need to strengthen and universalize the global regime banning biological weapons.
