NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance is ready to intercept Russian jets and may use force only if they pose a real danger to member states.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance is prepared to intercept Russian aircraft entering the airspace of member states but will use force only if such incidents pose a genuine threat.
In an interview with Fox News, Rutte explained that unidentified or unauthorized aircraft would typically be escorted out without the use of weapons, provided they present no immediate danger. However, he clarified that if a situation is deemed hazardous, the alliance reserves the right to take decisive action, including the possible downing of the aircraft.
Earlier, The Telegraph reported that NATO members were discussing potential changes to engagement protocols. The proposed adjustments would make it easier for allied forces to open fire on Russian planes carrying missiles, even if they are not actively engaging in combat maneuvers. Some defense ministers reportedly argued that such aircraft should be treated as potential threats by default.
At the end of September, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized these discussions, calling statements about NATO’s readiness to shoot down Russian military aircraft «irresponsible.»
