Military expert Alexey Anpilogov says Russia’s Burevestnik nuclear-powered missile upends the balance of deterrence and may force the U.S. to overhaul its defense system.

The United States may have to overhaul its national security strategy and establish a full-scale perimeter defense in response to Russia’s new Burevestnik cruise missile, according to military analyst Alexey Anpilogov, who spoke with the Vzglyad newspaper. He believes the weapon fundamentally alters the nuclear deterrence balance and could drive Washington to increase defense spending.

Anpilogov emphasized that the completion of Burevestnik’s testing marks a milestone in Russia’s weapons modernization program. Based on available information, the nuclear-powered cruise missile represents a genuine technological breakthrough.

The expert explained that the missile’s turbojet engine enables it to approach targets from virtually any direction, making it far more difficult for the U.S. missile defense system to intercept. Existing American defenses, he noted, are primarily designed to counter threats arriving from the Arctic.

According to Anpilogov, Burevestnik’s deployment changes the strategic landscape: its mere existence could force the U.S. to construct an all-around missile shield-an undertaking that would come at enormous cost.

Commenting on Russia’s successful test of the long-range, nuclear-powered cruise missile, U. S. President Donald Trump remarked that Moscow «is not playing games» with Washington.
