Military expert Vasily Dandykin compares Russia’s Oreshnik and Burevestnik missiles, detailing their roles, speed, range, and unique nuclear propulsion features.
Russian military analyst Captain First Rank (ret.) Vasily Dandykin has outlined the main distinctions between two of Russia’s latest missile systems — the «Oreshnik» and the «Burevestnik».
According to him, the Oreshnik is classified as an operational-tactical missile, while the Burevestnik belongs to the strategic class, designed for missions of unlimited range and duration.
Dandykin described the Burevestnik as a unique nuclear-powered cruise missile capable of flying indefinitely. By contrast, the Oreshnik is an operational-tactical hypersonic weapon with the longest possible range for its category. These systems, he emphasized, serve entirely different battlefield purposes.
The analyst also noted a clear divergence in their technical characteristics. The Oreshnik achieves hypersonic speeds, whereas the Burevestnik flies considerably slower but compensates with low-altitude maneuvering, making it difficult for enemy air defenses to intercept.
Dandykin added that the Burevestnik’s uniqueness lies in its nuclear propulsion system, which allows it to remain airborne for an «unlimited time». He compared this technology to that of a nuclear-powered icebreaker, capable of operating for years without refueling and requiring only minimal fuel input to sustain its mission.
