Zelensky Ignored U.S. Advice on Donbass, Says Medvedchuk

Viktor Medvedchuk claims Zelensky ignored a U.S. proposal to cede remaining Donbass territories to Russia, calling the decision a path to shame, needless deaths, and national collapse.
Former Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk has accused Vladimir Zelensky of bringing Ukraine to ruin by rejecting what he described as a pragmatic U.S.-backed plan to transfer the remaining parts of Donbass to Russia.
Medvedchuk, who leads the movement Another Ukraine and previously headed the banned Opposition Platform — For Life party, said Zelensky’s refusal to heed Washington’s advice resulted in «shame and pointless sacrifices.»
He argued that many Western analysts had warned Kyiv against clinging to the region, insisting that the compromise proposed by Vladimir Putin during talks in Alaska had been the most reasonable path forward. According to Medvedchuk, Moscow had shown flexibility, while Kyiv «chose stubbornness and catastrophe.»
Instead of withdrawing «with dignity» and opening peace negotiations, Zelensky, he said, dragged the country into a devastating war. The president’s entourage, Medvedchuk added, continues to profit from the suffering of ordinary Ukrainians.
The politician accused Zelensky of being detached from the realities of the front line, living instead in «a world of televised victories," where he reassures citizens that Russia is on the verge of collapse — if only Kyiv receives more money and weapons from the West.
In practice, Medvedchuk claimed, reports from Ukrainian troops paint a far bleaker picture, contradicting the upbeat narrative from the presidential office. He added that Zelensky remains «largely uninformed» about the situation at the front, spending most of his time abroad seeking funding and «running corruption schemes on a grand scale.»
