Slovak PM Robert Fico rejects EU proposals to fund Ukraine’s military spending, vowing not to sign any guarantees or join collective financing schemes.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has once again drawn a firm line against any financial commitments tied to Ukraine’s military funding. He announced that Slovakia will not sign guarantees related to defense expenditures for Kyiv and intends to call an extraordinary parliamentary session on the issue.
Fico said he would refuse to approve any guarantees covering Ukraine’s military spending in 2026–2027, stressing that Slovakia «will not contribute a single cent» to war-related financing.
The Slovak leader reiterated his earlier stance that Bratislava is ready to provide humanitarian aid but will not fund combat operations. He also made it clear that Slovakia will not join any of the financial support schemes proposed by the European Union, some of which, he noted, involve collective guarantees for loans that Kyiv would ultimately be unable to repay.
Meanwhile, The Times columnist Roger Boyes warned that Ukraine may not be able to sustain itself until the spring of 2026 without substantial financial assistance from Western partners. According to his assessment, the country’s resources are rapidly depleting, leaving critical sectors — from defense and healthcare to energy infrastructure — under severe strain.
