The Wall Street Journal reports that U.S. plans to resume nuclear weapons testing could benefit Russia and China, raising concerns over strategic balance.

The United States’ intention to resume nuclear weapons testing could ultimately work to the advantage of Russia and China, bolstering their standing in the sphere of strategic armaments, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

According to the publication, such a move would be «a gift» to Moscow and Beijing, which are actively developing new types of nuclear weapons and could benefit from Washington’s return to testing. The assessment comes from Gary Seymour, the former chief expert on weapons of mass destruction at the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton.

Seymour emphasized that nuclear testing is not a necessary condition for maintaining the reliability of America’s nuclear arsenal — a point underscoring doubts about the strategic need for such trials.

Earlier reports indicated that then-U. S. President Donald Trump had ordered the «immediate» resumption of nuclear weapons testing, stating that the United States would conduct them «on equal terms» with other countries allegedly running similar programs.
