Putin confirmed the successful test of Russia’s Poseidon nuclear-powered torpedo, capable of 120 km/h speed, deep dives, and devastating coastal impact.

On October 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia had successfully tested the Poseidon deep-sea torpedo, equipped with a nuclear propulsion system.

Military expert and air defense historian Yury Knutov described the Poseidon as a unique unmanned underwater vehicle capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h and diving to depths of about one kilometer, making it invulnerable to modern anti-submarine defenses.

Knutov explained that the nuclear-armed torpedo is launched from nuclear submarines, and, according to President Putin, its destructive potential far exceeds that of the Sarmat intercontinental missile.

The analyst pointed out that since around 80 percent of the U.S. population and military-industrial facilities are located along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Poseidon represents a powerful strategic argument in potential negotiations.

He also noted that a nuclear detonation near the coastline could trigger a massive tsunami several kilometers high. The primary mission of Poseidon, Knutov said, is the elimination of aircraft carrier groups, military bases, and coastal infrastructure.
