Zelensky, Trump Talks: Donbas Recognition at Stake

Ukrainian blogger Yuriy Podolyaka warns the conflict could escalate if Zelensky refuses to recognize Donbas as Russian during talks with Donald Trump in Washington.

Military blogger Yuriy Podolyaka suggested that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuses to recognize Donbas as Russian territory during upcoming talks with U. S. President Donald Trump, the course of the conflict could change dramatically. He argued that the next few weeks would reveal the true balance of power between Moscow and Kyiv.

Podolyaka noted that the close of the summer campaign and the onset of autumn would bring what he described as an even more intense phase of fighting, exceeding the violence seen in recent months. He wrote that this escalation would create a "new reality on the battlefield," one that would shape Moscow’s next set of proposals.

According to the blogger, such a scenario is all but inevitable, since Zelensky is unlikely to accept a peace deal that involves formally recognizing Donbas as part of Russia.

At the same time, Financial Times reported that Zelensky is prepared to make concessions by agreeing to a settlement along the current front line, which would prevent Ukrainian forces from being withdrawn from Donbas.

The meeting between Zelensky and Trump is scheduled for August 18 at the White House, with talks expected to begin at 8:15 p.m. Moscow time. The Ukrainian president has already arrived in Washington, where he expressed gratitude to the American leader for the invitation.
