Chief designer Yuri Solomonov said the 2020 Bulava missile launch shocked potential adversaries. All missiles hit their targets, marking a major step in Russia’s defense program.

According to Yuri Solomonov, Chief Designer at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology, the launch of Bulava missiles in 2020 left Russia’s potential adversaries in a state of shock. He described the event as a serious and unexpected demonstration of capability.

The first salvo launch of Bulava missiles took place in December 2020. The nuclear submarine Vladimir Monomakh, a Project 955 «Borey»-class vessel, fired four missiles from a submerged position in the Sea of Okhotsk toward the Chizha test range in the Arkhangelsk region. All warheads successfully reached their designated targets.

By the end of 2022, a total of 40 test launches had been conducted. On May 7, 2024, a presidential decree officially confirmed the Bulava submarine-based missile system’s adoption into service.
