U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead NATO task force drafting security guarantees for Ukraine, including air defense, weapons, and cease-fire oversight.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead a special task force composed of national security advisers and NATO officials tasked with drafting security guarantees for Ukraine. The decision, the paper noted, followed discussions between President Donald Trump and European leaders at the White House.

Sources told the publication that the proposed package of guarantees could include four key elements: a continued military presence, air defense systems, weapons supplies, and oversight of any cease-fire agreement. Officials in Washington also signaled that the United States may provide indirect military support to European peacekeeping efforts without deploying American troops.

The newspaper emphasized that the central issue in Trump’s talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders was precisely the question of security guarantees, modeled on NATO’s Article 5 on collective defense. Trump himself said that one of the most significant outcomes of the Anchorage summit was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s agreement on the need for such guarantees.

At the same time, the U.S. president declined to reveal details of the potential arrangements or the extent of American involvement. He stressed instead that the primary burden would fall on European nations.
