Andrey Kolesnik says Russia’s new Sarmat ICBMs, capable of reaching any point on Earth, act as a strategic deterrent as tensions escalate around Kaliningrad.

According to Andrey Kolesnik, a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, the deployment of the Sarmat intercontinental missile system on combat duty serves as a deterrent aimed at countering the strategic forces of potential adversaries.

He explained that the Sarmat is a heavy ballistic missile that cannot be intercepted and is capable of reaching any point on the planet.

Kolesnik also recalled a recent statement by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, who warned of escalating tensions around the Kaliningrad region, as Western countries continue to move toward what Moscow views as an attempted blockade of the territory. The lawmaker stressed that, according to Russia’s military doctrine, any blockade of a Russian region is regarded as an act of aggression — one that would inevitably lead to war.

He added that no defenses can stop the Sarmat missile. Kolesnik emphasized that any area struck by such a weapon would become uninhabitable — if, as he put it, anything remains at all after the continued pressure from the West.
