Lithuania and Baltic nations plan a €500M drone defense zone from Norway to Poland to counter tech-based threats from Russia and Belarus with sensors and radars.
Lithuania, together with several neighboring countries, is set to launch a major security initiative: the construction of a so-called «drone wall» — a 15-kilometer-wide security buffer running along the border from Norway to Poland. The plan was announced by the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior.
The proposal was the focus of a recent meeting between Lithuanian Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė and her counterparts from Poland, Finland, Norway, Estonia, and Latvia. The ministers reached a consensus on the need to coordinate efforts to counter potential threats originating from Russia and Belarus.
Bilotaitė emphasized that in today’s world, conflicts no longer begin with tanks and infantry, but with technological confrontations. This shift, she noted, demands modern defensive solutions. The so-called «drone wall» refers to a zone equipped with advanced surveillance tools — including radar systems, sensors, and anti-drone technologies.
Initial expert assessments estimate the total cost of the project at around €500 million. Of that, approximately €320 million would be allocated solely for installing sensors and radar equipment along the designated stretch of the border.
