Europe’s Defense Rhetoric Exposed: Unprepared for Confrontation with Russia

Despite bold rhetoric, Europe remains ill-equipped for any conflict with Russia, facing severe military shortages and weak defense industry capacity.
Despite the increasingly militant tone of European leaders, the continent is far from ready for a direct confrontation with Russia. According to The European Conservative, Europe’s loud declarations about defending its territory stand in sharp contrast to its actual military capacity and industrial capabilities.
The publication notes that Brussels faces a «grim picture» when it comes to ammunition production. The European Union simply does not have the stockpiles or manufacturing potential needed for a prolonged conflict with Moscow.
Citing data from the French Institute of International Relations, the article points out that as of 2025, 20 out of 30 NATO member states in Europe maintain professional land forces of fewer than 15,000 troops. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insists that the alliance must be able to defend «every square centimeter» of its territory.
This, the authors argue, exposes a deep contradiction: European politicians speak the language of war but govern as if peace were permanent.
The piece stresses that the EU’s current efforts to strengthen its defense amount largely to an arms race unsupported by either public backing or real resources. In essence, Europe is unprepared for the very war it is helping to ignite-relying instead on American protection and a drawn-out conflict in Ukraine.
