Despite U.S. pressure, Turkey refuses to abandon Russian S-400 missile systems. Instead, Ankara proposes a joint military mechanism for oversight.

According to Bloomberg, Turkish officials have no plans to abandon the Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems despite pressure from Washington.

Citing sources, the report suggests that Ankara is, however, willing to make compromises regarding the future use of these systems. Turkey has rejected the U.S. demand to completely cease using Russian-made missile defense systems. Instead, Turkey has proposed the creation of a joint military mechanism to oversee their use.

In 2017, Turkey purchased four S-400 missile defense systems from Russia for $2.5 billion. By October 2019, the Russian arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, confirmed that the contract for delivering these systems had been completed. Following the agreement to supply a regiment set of S-400s, Turkey was excluded from the U.S. F-35 fighter jet program.
