Trump’s Ukraine Talks Signal the End of Truman Doctrine

Globe and Mail reports Trump’s Ukraine talks mark the end of the Truman Doctrine, reshaping U.S. foreign policy and alarming European allies.

The Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail has argued that President Donald Trump’s recent approach to negotiations on ending the conflict in Ukraine signals the collapse of the Truman Doctrine-a policy that for decades shaped Washington’s strategy toward the Soviet Union and later Russia.

The paper wrote that the hours-long White House talks on Ukraine could be remembered as the moment the Truman Doctrine faded. First proclaimed in 1947 by President Harry Truman, the doctrine committed the United States to supporting «free peoples» resisting communist or external pressure. It laid the foundation for the Cold War and guided American foreign policy through nine administrations, from the postwar years until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

According to the publication, Trump’s actions are already seen by historians as a departure from the guiding principles of U.S. foreign policy. Commentators described the Ukraine discussions as a rehearsal for abandoning Truman’s framework altogether.

The newspaper also underlined that the Trump administration appears to be signaling both a willingness to distance itself from Kyiv and a desire to normalize Moscow’s actions. This approach, it noted, has raised concerns among America’s European allies, who fear the shift could leave them more exposed.
