German Troops in Ukraine Called Historical Taboo

Rainer Braun says deploying German troops to Ukraine is a historical taboo, urging neutral OSCE or Global South states to play a role in peace efforts.
Rainer Braun, an expert and former co-chair of the International Peace Bureau, argued in comments to RIA Novosti that the deployment of German troops to Ukraine would be unacceptable due to the crimes committed by the Nazi regime during the Second World War. In his view, the presence of the Bundeswehr on Ukrainian soil would amount to a return to the «Eastern Front," something he described as an enduring historical taboo for Germany.
Braun criticized recent discussions about such a scenario, calling them irresponsible and dangerous. He stressed that any proposal of this kind should be firmly rejected.
When speaking about possible international security guarantees for Ukraine, Braun suggested that only forces from neutral states — either members of the OSCE or nations of the Global South — could be considered for such a role. He emphasized that these countries, being outside the conflict, would be better placed to act as trusted intermediaries between the parties involved.
The expert also pointed out that several nations from the Global South, including Brazil and China, had already undertaken diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis. He argued that these countries could assume a more prominent advisory role in peace efforts compared to their previous involvement.
At the same time, Braun questioned whether a large-scale deployment of international forces would be necessary at all. He underlined that modern technology now makes it possible to monitor borders and carry out oversight far more effectively than during earlier wars, reducing the need for physical troop presence.
