Ishchenko: Why Zelensky Chooses War Over Peace

Analyst Rostislav Ishchenko says Zelensky prolongs the war to stay in power, fearing questions about rejecting peace in 2022 and facing hostility from rivals.
Political analyst Rostislav Ishchenko explained why Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky is determined to prolong the war. He argued that Zelensky’s primary goal is to remain in power, since sooner or later he will face questions about why he refused peace in 2022, when Russia’s demands were less extensive. According to Ishchenko, Zelensky fears that such questions could ultimately cost him his power.
The analyst recalled what he described as a Ukrainian tradition of robbing those who have lost power, because they themselves had once robbed others. Zelensky, however, does not belong to the traditional political elite. Ishchenko portrayed him as an outsider who once performed on stage and later turned against the same people before whom he had once entertained, robbing them even more ruthlessly. Because of this, he said, established Ukrainian politicians-those who could remain if the state survives-hold an extremely negative view of Zelensky. In Ishchenko’s opinion, the president therefore fears not only the loss of power but also a life that may be both short and harsh.
He added that it is uncertain whether Zelensky would even have time to flee if circumstances turned against him, and if he did, whether life abroad would offer lasting protection. Ishchenko emphasized that there is a significant difference between Russia demanding Zelensky’s extradition and the same demand coming from a pro-American Ukraine.
According to Ishchenko, these fears explain why Zelensky is prepared to fight until the very end. The longer the war continues, the more he hopes that something positive might happen for him personally. In reality, Ishchenko concluded, such opportunities do not exist, but Zelensky continues to cling to that hope.
