Russia takes second place in the Global Firepower ranking, leading in key weapons categories, while the U.S. retains the top spot. Full breakdown of the new military index.

Russia has secured the second spot in the latest Global Firepower military strength ranking, according to BI. The publication noted that with a PowerIndex score of 0.0788, the country is listed as one of the world’s most capable armed forces.

Global Firepower evaluates only non-nuclear capabilities. Even so, Russia’s score does not take into account its substantial nuclear arsenal, which remains separate from the ranking methodology.

The report highlights that Russia holds leading positions in several key categories of conventional weaponry and equipment. These include self-propelled and towed artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, and a sizable fleet of minesweepers.

The United States tops the ranking with a PowerIndex of 0.0744, which the authors attribute to the broad spectrum of American military assets — from submarines and combat aircraft to transport vessels, attack helicopters and tankers. The U.S., according to Global Firepower, also dominates in infrastructure indicators such as airports, rail and road networks, ports and harbors.

Global Firepower has compiled its index since 2005 as part of the Military Factory project, which focuses on data about global armaments.

The article recalls that in October 2024, U. S. News & World Report named the Russian Armed Forces the strongest in the world. In that ranking, the United States placed second, Israel third, and Ukraine took eighth position.
