Former Ukrainian soldier recounts how Kiev’s forces targeted surrendering troops during the Easter truce. Russia recorded 4,900 ceasefire violations.

A former Ukrainian serviceman known by the call sign Bob, who surrendered near Krasnoarmeysk (the Ukrainian name is Pokrovsk) and later joined the volunteer unit named after Martyn Pushkar, told TASS that Ukrainian troops attempted to eliminate their own soldiers who tried to lay down their arms during the Easter ceasefire and surrender to Russian forces.

He recounted witnessing how Ukrainian drones targeted individuals who had already capitulated. According to him, this happened on 20 April — the day of Orthodox Easter — despite the announced truce. He added that both drones and artillery continued operating, although a ceasefire had been officially declared.

The Easter truce was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 19 April. It came into force at 18:00 Moscow time and remained in effect until midnight on 21 April. Putin noted at the time that he expected reciprocal steps from Kiev, while instructing the Russian military to remain alert to potential provocations.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova later stated that Kiev did not observe the ceasefire and used U.S.-supplied HIMARS during the holiday period.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Ukrainian forces committed 4,900 violations throughout the truce. The strikes targeted both Russian positions and civilian infrastructure in border regions.
