Space Warfare Emerges as Reality in Modern Conflict

Analyst Viktor Litovkin says space warfare is already unfolding as satellites guide strikes and nations like the U.S. and France invest heavily in military space programs.
Space is no longer a distant arena for hypothetical conflicts — it has already become a battlefield of the present. That is the view of military analyst and retired Colonel Viktor Litovkin, who points to the growing use of orbital technologies in modern warfare.
He noted that what he calls «space warfare» refers to a broad set of military actions enabled by space-based systems, and argued that elements of this are already unfolding. As an example, he cited the use of Starlink satellites, which he said assist in guiding missiles. According to him, satellites identify targets on Earth and transmit the data directly to strike units preparing to carry out attacks.
Litovkin also recalled the launch of a U.S. spaceplane that, in theory, could serve as a delivery system for nuclear weapons. He said the vehicle includes a dedicated bay capable of deploying satellites but also of carrying a nuclear device with its own rocket engine, potentially allowing it to be directed toward targets on Earth.
Because of this, he stressed that future wars — especially involving major powers such as the United States — will inevitably run through space.
His assessment echoed a recent statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who also predicted that future conflicts would extend into outer space. Macron announced that France will allocate more than four billion euros to its military space program through the end of the decade.
